Spottswood W. Robinson III and Robert R. Merhige Jr. U.S. Courthouse
Tompkins Builders served as general contractor for this new federal courthouse located in Richmond, VA. The courthouse included the construction of a 346,000 GSF building with eight stories and 64 below-grade parking spaces. The building has a steel structure with progressive collapse design. The curtainwall consists of blast resistant glass and glazing with side plate connections. Structurally speaking, the building is composed of stone and precast concrete with ornamental steel rails. Interior finishes include custom millwork and built-in furnishings, while the special raised access floors are made of Portland Cement Terrazzo. Additional special requirements incorporated into the project include LEED Certification (silver rating) and drawings and specification utilizing metric units.
The courthouse provides housing for the U.S. District Court, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, U.S. Probation Office, Pretrial Services Office, Federal Public Defender, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Trustees Office, and other tenants. The new federal courthouse displays Tompkins’ unique understanding of courthouse construction in an urban environment involving restricted access and other logistical challenges.
